About the Sector

Australia’s natural assets are in crisis. We have the highest rate of mammal extinctions in the world, the highest rate of threatened mammals and plants, unprecedented droughts in the bush and water shortages in our cities. What role can philanthropy play in bringing about the change and innovation required to protect our environment? Can philanthropic funding help to transform environmental management? To answer these questions we must first understand the sector.

To this end, the AEGN is proud to present

Green Philanthropy Reports

An analysis of funding by members of the Australian Environmental Grantmakers Network and related philanthropic trends.

You are welcome to download a copy of these reports:

Please contact the AEGN if you would like to receive a printed copy.

The aim of this report is to give an overview of philanthropic giving to organisations working to protect and manage the environment in Australia. They outline the results of surveys of members conducted by AEGN in 2008 and 2010, and summarise relevant information from other reports on philanthropy and giving in Australia and overseas. The also provides key findings and recommendations to help inform future work in this area.

While it is difficult to get a true figure of how much philanthropic support is going toward the environment, it appears that the current level does not match the urgency of Australia’s environmental decline.

If we are to address these urgent issues, this report suggests that environmental philanthropy must:

  • Grow substantially;
  • Get better at the craft of grantmaking;
  • Build stronger relationships with the environmental community sector; &
  • Learn from other international philanthropic networks.
