Climate Change and Defence

The AEGN’s Sue Mathews spoke to two retired Admirals, Admiral Chris Barrie, former chief of the Australian Defence Force, and Rear Admiral Neil Morisetti, the UK Government’s former Climate Change and Energy Security Envoy, about climate change and security. Increasingly, climate change is being recognised as a security threat, and therefore as something that defence forces around the world should be considering in the future planning and resourcing. Defence forces are uniquely positioned to respond to climate change, often responding to natural disasters, food insecurity and instability caused by climate change, while also relying on green technology like solar power to improve operational capability.

Sue speaks to both about their work in the military and in government regarding the environment, and their views on the role of philanthropy in tackling climate change. The full video can be accessed at
