The COVID-19 crisis has caused the largest global economic downturn since the Great Depression, leaving hundreds of thousands of employees in Australia unemployed or underemployed. The effects of this will be felt for many years to come. However, in times of crisis, there are opportunities.
70 organisations across Australia have signed the following briefing note, addressed to the Prime Minister, proposing a $4 billion combined state and federal stimulus package centred around environmental conservation and regeneration.
The proposal, which would employ 24,000 Australians over two years, focuses on providing work that is safe, meaningful and socially-beneficial to those in areas and industries that have been hardest hit by the economic crisis. Planning, development and initial employment would take place during the current period of social distancing, providing security and allowing workers to hit the ground running once regulations are eased.
