A message from the CEO

This week has seen the continued critical call to action around race and equity in the US and in our own country.

Our friends from the US Environmental Grantmakers Association have recently sent a message to their members on Black Lives Matter.

Many AEGN members and staff stand in solidarity with those protesting to demand accountability and justice and we acknowledge the pain and suffering of loss and injustice that the Black and Australian Indigenous communities directly confront.

The AEGN works to build funder skills and knowledge in supporting First Nations people to manage their land and sea. In a week a where 46,000 years of cultural heritage was blown up in pursuit of minerals and money our work to support Indigenous land and sea management is more important than ever. We are committed to building this program with AEGN members so let us know if you are interested in being involved by contacting ione@aegn.org.au

In a more positive vein, this week we have seen a hopeful look at things to come, as we watch our friends across the pond in New Zealand successfully eliminate COVID-19 and remove all restrictions. The lessons we have learned from the pandemic will remain with us, as will the impacts of the economic crisis the pandemic has caused.

A sustainable, net-zero carbon economy is an essential part of a successful recovery from the COVID-19 and bushfire crises we have faced in the last six months. Now is the time for transitions, and we must seize the opportunity we have been given.
