Ripe for Change is a place-based small grants program supporting healthy and resilient local food systems. The need for this grants program was identified through an in-depth review of local food system challenges and was successfully piloted in the Casey, Cardinia and Mornington Peninsula regions of Victoria in 2017-18.

For a short but spectacular overview of what was achieved during the 2017-18 pilot program, please view our celebration video, which features four of the twelve projects that received funding.

The AEGN is shining a spotlight on the vital links between effective communication, collaboration and climate change funding. At our conference last year we asked:

Who do we need to reach with key environmental messages and how can this be achieved?

What strategies do we need to cut through the challenges and opposing forces we face in Australia today?

What’s working and who can we learn from?

In 2015 we conducted interviews with three experts who generously shared their unique insights into the role philanthropists can play when it comes tackling climate change.

One of these experts was visiting UK climate communications specialist George Marshall.

Our very own Sue Mathews spoke to George about how we can improve climate change communications, and which funding approaches can achieve real change:

You can watch the full George Marshall interview here.

In June 2015, the AEGN interviewed Admiral Chris Barrie (former chief of the Australian Defence Force) and Rear Admiral Neil Morisetti (UK Government’s former Climate Change and Energy Security Envoy) about climate change and security. Below is an excerpt featuring their thoughts on the role of philanthropy in tackling climate change:

You can watch the full interview with the Admirals here.

In September 2015, the AEGN brought international strategic communications expert and Managing Director of Climate Nexus – Robert Tanner – to Australia to be a keynote speaker at our annual conference. During his keynote, Bob explained how Climate Nexus fits within the broader context of climate change work in the US, the keys to its success, the role philanthropy has played and what are the lessons for us here in Australia.

Bob also participated in-depth talks and side meetings with environmental NGOs and philanthropists during his time in Sydney and Melbourne.

This coincided with a funder-led initiative to establish a new Climate Media Centre, co-located with Climate Council of Australia, which aims to service the broad communications needs of the climate change movement.

To respond to climate change we need to stop using fossil fuels and switch to renewable energy to power our society. There is a transition underway in Australia right now which needs acceleration, but what happens to the communities whose economies are tied to coal?

Earlier this year the AEGN visited the Latrobe and Hunter Valleys to learn what is needed to support these communities to achieve a just transition to a new economic future. Justin Maxson, Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation and Lisa Abbott, Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, came on the journey with us and shared their deep knowledge of just transitions in the Appalachian region of the US.

We now have two videos available of interviews with Justin, Lisa and Mark Randazzo from the EDGE Funders Alliance. Listen to Sue Matthews of the Mullum Trust in conversation with these leading transitions practitioners, talking about the role for philanthropy and what communities do to drive a just transition.
