Leading political experts provide briefing for Philanthropic sector

As Federal Parliament returns and as the country and world continues to combat COVID-19, Reichstein Foundation together with Philanthropy Australia have put together a panel of distinguished experts to assist the sector to understand what does this all mean, what are the major parties thinking as we enter this new phase and what opportunities are there for philanthropy to make a contribution to the national recovery agenda.

The panel of experts come with a wealth of experience including being Chiefs of Staff to many previous leaders of ALP, Liberal Party and Greens.

Chaired by AEGN member Jill Reichstein, Reichstein Foundation, and closed by the CEO of Philanthropy Australia, Sarah Davies.

Speakers

Simon Banks

One of Australia’s most highly respected government relations, campaigning and strategic communications professionals. Since 2007, Simon has advised some of Australia’s and the world’s largest companies on significant commercial transactions requiring Commonwealth Government approvals. Prior to joining Hawker Britton, Simon served as Chief of Staff or Deputy Chief of Staff to three Federal Labor Leaders and has been Federal Labor’s director of policy and a senior policy and media adviser to a number of Labor ministers and shadow ministers.

Cheryl Cartwright

Cheryl has built extensive experience as the CEO of a national industry organisation and Cabinet Minister’s chief of staff, following a diverse media career including in the Canberra press gallery covering politics, where she worked in print, radio and television. In the Howard Government she was a senior media adviser, and Chief of Staff to the Agriculture Minister, following which she was national CEO for a decade for the gas transmission industry association.

Grahame Morris

One of Australia’s most respected political commentators and government relations professionals and is the head of Barton Deakin’s Commonwealth division. Grahame has more than 30 years’ association with the Liberal and National Parties around the country and served as Deputy Federal Director of the Liberal Party and State Director of the SA Liberal Party. He also had a distinguished career at Parliament House serving as parliamentary adviser to Liberal Leaders Andrew Peacock and Alexander Downer and as Chief of Staff to former Prime Minister, John Howard. He has worked with the Coalition on 26 state and federal campaigns around the country.

Ben O’Quist

Ben is a highly respected policy analyst, commentator and political and communications strategist. He was appointed Executive Director of the Australia Institute in 2015. Ben was Chief of Staff to Bob Brown and Christine Milne when they led the Australian Greens. Before this he was the Canberra adviser to progressive public affairs company Essential Media Communications. Ben maintains a particular interest in ensuring progressive voices feature more strongly in Australia’s economic debates.
