Pre-conference workshops
This year we are excited to offer three workshops on Tuesday April 30, the day before the conference. They are:
Advocacy in action: Tips and tools for using your power and influence to save the world
Advocacy is a powerful tool for influencing decisions and securing lasting environment and climate outcomes. It takes many different forms – from writing submissions to doing media interviews; from meeting with Ministers to grassroots community development work; from litigation to rallies to shareholder actions.
There is no single way to “do advocacy” effectively, and it’s often a combination of actions. What will work well depends on the issue, the decision-makers, timing, collaborators, and the resources available.
AEGN members have individual and collective power to support eNGOs doing advocacy work. They also have personal and professional power to advocate for change. This workshop will introduce AEGN’s new Advocacy Strategy and explore a range of advocacy tools and how to use them strategically. Hear stories from experts about successful campaigns, not so successful campaigns, the role of philanthropy, and what to think about when deciding how to use your influence for maximum environmental impact.
The wisdom of women: Inner work for effective action
Women hold vital and wise perspectives, skills and experiences that are needed for to shift our world into new ways of thinking, feeling and doing. This workshop is a space for female identifying funders to explore the mindsets, challenges and systems that often inhibit women from stepping into their potential. It will be an intimate and facilitated space to share, learn from and support one another with a view to future connections and collaborations amongst AEGN women.
Hosted by the Centre for Effective Action, a collaboration between Marike Knight and Lucy Richards, with guest speaker, Hayley Morris.
Funding with trust, humility and cultural awareness
In order to achieve climate justice and a future where people and nature thrive, we must have First Nations Justice. This two-part workshop is an introduction to applying more social lens to the way you give. The workshop will highlight gaps within philanthropic structures and opportunities to collaboratively double down and reinvest wealth back into First Nations communities, drawing on personal reflection and mindfulness. The workshop will be facilitated by Mary Harm and Tishiko King.
Part 1: Life map – your story
A creative activity that holistically approaches your reason for impact.
Part 2: Decolonising philanthropy with radical love
Mindful thinking for intentional, meaningful and lasting impact.
Testimonials
“I participated in this workshop in the Torres Strait last year and I highly recommend this workshop, whether as a “toe in the water” or to expand your current expertise.
I’ve been funding First Nations organisations for many years and had numerous on-country trips and conversations with elders but despite this previous experience, the workshop completely changed my thinking.
I am attending again to consolidate what I learnt, as well as gain fresh new insights. There are so many layers to First Nations Culture and history and continued exposure to varied information is the key to knowledge.”
Vicki Olsson, AEGN member
“Tish has been a huge asset to our Groundswell team and her expertise running our Caring for Country grant rounds has been a total game-changer. Personally, my time spent in Zenadeth Kes/ Torres Strait Islands in a journey of active allyship and decolonising philanthropy has been one of the most impactful experiences of my life. Tish is a hugely generous and knowledgeable leader, I wish everyone could learn from.”
